We were 16 and it was Valentine's Day. He brought me the cutest little stuffed gorilla. He held my hand and opened doors for me. He made me feel like I was the ONE, which is a pretty cool feeling for a teenage girl. He's told me that his only regret that night was his choice of movie - Ace Ventura. Not sure what the thought process was there... As you can imagine, it's quite frustrating for a teenage boy when he leans over to sneak a first kiss, and the obnoxious fellow on screen unveils the "worst case of hemorrhoids ever seen!" Doh! Well, I'll always have a special place in my heart for stuffed gorillas and Valentines. <br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=14/02/27/356.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/14/02/27/s_356.jpg' border='0' width='300' height='300' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br />And I've long since forgiven him for the movie choice, since he truly embraces my little quirks... When I'm quilting, for example, I usually listen to music through my ear buds. And I sing aloud. Out LOUD. Listen, I don't have any vocal training. After 7 years of orchestra, I'm fairly certain I'm tone deaf and completely incapable of keeping a beat. So when I start singing, it's no treat. But I love it, and I am without shame when I'm belting out my favorite diva hits while cruising through an edge to edge design on Violet. There might even be dancing... It's not unusual for me to look up from my work and find my love watching me, with a crooked grin and unmistakable, sincere love in his eyes. <br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=14/02/27/357.jpg'><img src='http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/14/02/27/s_357.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br /><br />It's the same look he gets when I'm deep in the middle of figuring out a new design (like I have been every night this week), and he tries to talk to me. Sometimes I look at him like I'm listening, but I keep typing; often I mumble and nod at whatever he says until I notice that he's gotten very quiet. Then I focus on him. He's always got that same look on his face - complete adoration. He should be annoyed. Jealous, maybe, of my attention. But that's not how he's made. And it's contagious... It makes me love my work self too. When seen through his eyes, that girl's pretty neat. <br /><br />Just sayin'... I'm pretty sure I'll always love February. <br /><br />The Quilt and Needlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03229867274570354924noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6078937882570961533.post-80106041992520692352014-02-25T19:07:00.004-08:002014-02-25T19:23:23.603-08:00What's in a name?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Our yearly retreat is quickly approaching, and, as usual, I'm eagerly anticipating the reveal of another new mystery that weekend. I've lost track of the number of mystery quilts I've designed for our annual retreat in Tomball, Tx, but one of the first was Friends and Fellows. I love that name - it just has a lovely cadence and the alliteration makes it roll off the tongue well. Friends and Fellows. It's a name that originates in a partial block within the quilt and that embodies the camaraderie we find at a quilt retreat. <br />

It's becoming increasingly difficult for me to come up with names for my patterns, especially when I design several in a short period of time. Good names, that is. Something not already overly used and something that applies to the design. Sometimes a name just lands on a pattern and I know it's right, that no other name could possible fit as well. Take Outside the Box, for example. When you say the name, you know the quilt. It just fits. The name actually paints a picture of that quilt in my head.</div>

I've sometimes resorted to having my quilty friends and forum members help me name a pattern. My good friend Ms. Pat (<a href="http://scrapatches.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Life in the Scrapatch</a>) thought up the name for Windsong. I immediately knew the name was right. In this case, the name actually adds to the romance and fluidity of this design. <br />

<br />
Tonight I'm challenged with naming my new mystery design. For now I'm calling it "Frolic," because I like what that says about my design intentions, and because a good "Frolicking" friend of mine is on my mind tonight. I realize that I really must settle on a name before dawn tomorrow. So, for now, for the next few hours anyway, this one shall be "Frolic." What does that say to you about the pattern?<br />

<br />
Jess's patterns are fantastic. I've been testing her mysteries for quite a few years now, and always enjoy it. But this one, well, this one overwhelmed me some. As I had a baby in the house.<br />
<br />
I'm talking about the <a href="http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details.asp?Shopper_id=6905815738566905&Store_id=691&page_id=23&Item_ID=1987" target="_blank">Someday quilt </a>that Jess designed as a mystery in 2011. This quilt is 78 x89" , and has 224 - 5.5” pieced blocks! That is a LOT of blocks.Jess is fantastic at giving you tips along the way. Like using baggies to keep your step pieces in, or using sticky papers. A design wall also comes in handy, but some of us don't have one of those. So here's a few tips I put together for helping to keep your project in order, as you sew it.<br />
<br />
I finished piecing all my blocks together, then had to set the project aside for another day. That day finally got here a few weeks ago. I laid out all my blocks and put them in piles of same blocks. (If you have a small side table you can put near your machine, that would work great. I just had to use the flap on my sewing cabinet.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qlm5rKkRyq4/UixfqiBFqKI/AAAAAAAAA2o/8m76yGw6cmc/s1600/organize1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qlm5rKkRyq4/UixfqiBFqKI/AAAAAAAAA2o/8m76yGw6cmc/s400/organize1.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I started by looking at the directions for piecing together the finished top. I took the first two blocks, sewed them together and check marked them off on the piece of paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9QKRmPcTomg/Ui95D9FcHLI/AAAAAAAAA3k/IhKcxN6Q_3M/s1600/organize5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9QKRmPcTomg/Ui95D9FcHLI/AAAAAAAAA3k/IhKcxN6Q_3M/s320/organize5.JPG" height="320" width="318" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
I continued to chain stitch all of the first row together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lxKe1qPGznI/UixgWe6lGHI/AAAAAAAAA24/bec6bPcp0u0/s1600/organize3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lxKe1qPGznI/UixgWe6lGHI/AAAAAAAAA24/bec6bPcp0u0/s400/organize3.JPG" height="142" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Making sure I check marked each piece on the piece of paper.<br />
<br />
I made all my rows, keeping them in a chain. When I got to the end of row one, I started row two, then sniped off row one and safety pinned a #1 to it. Then folded it up and set it aside. I did these with all the rows as I got finished with this step.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tfZRMFy7RjY/UixgkKe4f6I/AAAAAAAAA3A/39LE2s27h30/s1600/organize2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tfZRMFy7RjY/UixgkKe4f6I/AAAAAAAAA3A/39LE2s27h30/s400/organize2.JPG" height="220" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then I took my row one, snipped all the blocks apart, and started chain stitching two by two. Leaving the last two by themselves. <br />
<br />
<img alt="" src="data:image/png;base64,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" /><br />
<br />
Still working with row one. I then stitched two-4pieces together, and the 4 and 2 piece.<br />
<br />
<img alt="" src="data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAW8AAAAvCAIAAACjcdybAAACGklEQVR4nO3c207DQAwFwPw5n14ekCoupQm7p8TezDzH9uJGp7RBbDeAhO3sAwCLkCZAhjQBMqQJkCFNgAxpAmRIEyBDmgAZ+2nydjHDqzz74P9qeEs21m5dx094KE1mfv7hwrPm/v/Qmdp2Q1N9Lrix+ieXJpnCs2rbDU31ueDG6p9cmmQKz6ptNzTV54Ibq39yaZIpPKu23dBUnwturP7JpcnRwm3btu3ZuqoduObQVJ/FNrZ7d81Mn6mVJq9Kk9vTV73agWsOTfVZbGP3u+sV02dqpcns7rZf3C97mCn1X+wKQ1N9FtvY/XZ6Eig1T/6ZNHlQuPs754dvmVL/xa4wNNWn6cZ+e6Pafa+amT5TK02kSd2hqT5NN3bw1np4Zf11SZMHhT7pvG5oqk/TjR1Pk58X11+XNDla6FvYyNBUn6Yb+1Oa3L7eb/XXJU2OFnpCHBma6tN0YwNpMj99plaaNLvVZmrbDU31aboxn3QGzzFTK01WHZrq03RjvoUdPMdMrTRZdWiqT9ONeUI8eI6ZWmmy6tBUn8U25q/Xwkf5Vlh/dxVq2w1N9VlsY/cnhq+YPlMrTZrdajO17Yam+iy2sd0nhjPTZ2rzaXIpY0u/2qKGt2Rj7dZ1/IT+yzSQIU2ADGkCZEgTIEOaABnSBMiQJkCGNAEypAmQIU2ADGkCZEgTIEOaABnSBMiQJkCGNAEypAmQIU2AjHfXIilE7O2PJQAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==" /><br />
<br />
And then sewed those two pieces together.<br />
<br />

<br />
I thin reclipped the row #1 sign to it, and started row two.<br />
<br />
Repeat, another 14 times!<br />
<br />
And when all the rows were sewn, I took rows one and two, sewed them together; checked marked them off on the paper; and safety pinned their row numbers to them. Continue till all your rows are sewn together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AJ9UD4FWH4c/UixhqbKvyPI/AAAAAAAAA3M/nzkU5mZ8zkQ/s1600/organize4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AJ9UD4FWH4c/UixhqbKvyPI/AAAAAAAAA3M/nzkU5mZ8zkQ/s400/organize4.JPG" height="307" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Pinning the row numbers to your rows and marking off the blocks on your paper, really made this project go by smoothly and easily. I constantly looked at the paper to make sure my blocks were in the right place too.<br />
<br />
When you have your rows paired up and sewn, you take rows 1/2 and 3/4 and sew them together. Then 5/6 and 7/8. Etc. Just keep stitching the rows together and using your safety pins with the numbers on them. And pretty soon, I had my finished top.<br />

<br />
I hope my little tips can help you out when you are overwhelmed with a project. <br />
<br />
Have a great day!<br />

<br />
Howdy y'all! When I started The Quilt and Needle, I really wanted it to be an "online quilting pub" - with great friends, awesome quilting, and yummy food ideas. <br />
<br />
Over the years, we've had tons of phenomenal quilters come and go, making lasting friendships along the way. We've enjoyed crazy-cool patterns and grown together in our quilt-making abilities, seeing many of our novice quilters go professional and start to make a name for themselves out in the quilty world. (Jami, Lizzie, Dorian, Nikki, and Cindy... to name a few.)<br />
<br />
I'd like to start adding some foody stuff here. All my life I've had a love affair with food - I love to putter around in my garden and my kitchen, making new foody stuff for my friends and family. I've traveled around a bit, and I'm addicted to trying new foods.<br />
<br />
Recently, when I was diagnosed with a not-so-fun autoimmune disease, I was given the choice of starting a drug that is known to cause cancer OR go on a very strict, quite radically healthy diet. For me, that is a no-brainer. My diet didn't cause my illness, but it may be the key to dealing with it sans cancer pills. Frankly, I'd rather eat grass than take those pills, so there you have it. <br />
<br />
I'm afraid the foody stuff I'll post about won't be very pub-like, but I've got some great recipes, some awesome tips, and a lot of healthy eats to share. Diving right in, here's a pizza recipe that I really enjoy:<br />
<br />
<center>
<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=13/06/23/2605.jpg"><img border="0" height="210" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/13/06/23/s_2605.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="281" /></a></center>
<br />
Ingredients: <br />
100% whole grain pizza crust<br />
1/4 cup pizza sauce<br />
five cherry tomatoes, halved<br />
1/8 red onion, thinly sliced<br />
2-4 artichoke hearts, quartered (I like the small jars of marinated, quartered artichokes)<br />
1 small bell pepper, chopped<br />
1/4 cup fresh chopped pineapple<br />
crushed red pepper to taste<br />
1-2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (use a low fat pizza cheese here if you prefer)<br />
(Optional: add a bit of lean chicken breast or turkey bacon)<br />
<br />
Carefully spread the sauce on the crust, then add all of the toppings except nutritional yeast. Cook according to crust directions (I like mine directly on the rack for 8-12 minutes). Place under the broiler for a couple of additional minutes to really make those veggies taste snazzy. Carefully remove the pizza from the oven, and add the nutritional yeast while hot. Slice and serve. Nummy.<br />
<br />
<em>Piece</em> out, <br />
Jess<br />

It's been a long time since I've posted here. Having a 1yr means a lot less time :)</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>I wanted to tell you about our Saturday Special on the forum next month, May 18th.</b><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong>We will be making my Pats' Gems pattern. Go<a href="http://mtnmommy2.blogspot.com/2013/01/pats-gems.html"> here</a>
to see the original one.</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong>But for this Saturday Special, I changed it
slightly. Instead of 4x6 rows, it is 6x8 rows and doesn't have the
pieced border. It is roughly 54" x 70".</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong><br /></strong></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong>This is a charm pack friendly pattern, or you can use a layer cake, yardage or scraps! </strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong><br /></strong></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong>For this pattern you will need:</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong>Seventy-five 5" squares, in five different colors. They don't have to be the same shade. For example, for my blue color I used a medium blue, a light blue and one that has a white background with blue flowers on it.</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> <strong>10 green<br /> 9 pink<br /> 12 purple<br /> 24 blue<br /> 20 orange</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> <strong>And
2.5 yrds of contrasting background fabric. Cut this into seventy-five
5" squares, forty 4.5" squares and six 3.5"x wof for the borders.</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong> If you have FQ's, you can use them too. Here's the rundown on them...Thanks Pat! Cut into 5" squares.</strong></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong></strong></span> <b>1 green</b><br />
<b><span style="font-size: small;"> 1 pink<br /> 1 purple <br /> 2 blue<br /> 2 orange</span></b><br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: small;">I hope you all will come and join us on May 18th. I'll put a pdf up on the <a href="http://www.thequiltandneedle.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=2651&posts=4&start=1" target="_blank">forum</a>. We<span style="font-size: small;">'ll have a thread so we can show off our fabric ch<span style="font-size: small;">oices and show <span style="font-size: small;">our <span style="font-size: small;">prog<span style="font-size: small;">ress.</span></span></span></span></span></span></b><br />

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The quilting
world is split in half on the subject of washing your fabrics before you make
your quilt. I personally wash every fabric as it comes into the house and then
when I get ready to use it I know it has already been washed. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I highly recommend using Spray Sizing when you
press your fabric to cut it. It will give it some of that finish you love to
handle when you buy it, and it will help prevent slippage of your rulers as you
cut. If you want your quilt to appear more antique, and you are sure none of
the fabric color will bleed when washed, then don’t wash your fabrics first.
Your quilt will wrinkle a bit around the quilting stitches when you wash the
completed project. This makes it appear more like antique quilts. Keep in mind
that fabric that has not been washed will shrink some if you use steam when you
iron. Here are some helpful tips for washing your fabrics.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">It’s time for another Quilt & Needle Challenge!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Have you got your quilty thinking cap on?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I’m sure many of you have heard of Paint Chip
Challenges, and I hope that this challenge will be an awesome way for getting you
out of your comfy “color” zone.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Each quilter who accepts this mission will be sent a Paint
Chip card of the Hostess’ choice (that would be moi, Cindy!).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There will be 4 or 5 colors on each card –
you can use fabrics in any of the colors on that card - you can add fabrics of
your own choosing that coordinate with your card colors - HOWEVER, your card
colors MUST BE the focus of your quilt.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Example:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>let’s assume that you like scrappy quilts and
that you receive a “purple” paint chip card.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>You can use as wide a variety of fabrics to achieve the scrappiness you
like in a quilt but when I look at your quilt, I must see the “purples” from
your paint chip card, not mere glimpses of your card purples.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Other than the color requirements, there are
no other restrictions – let your imaginations soar as to your design, pattern,
type of project, etc.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">I will take sign-ups
through 5:00 P.M. Central, Monday, January 21<span style="font-size: x-small;">st</span>, 2013.</b><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You will need to email </span><a href="mailto:cindy@thequiltandneedle.com"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">cindy@thequiltandneedle.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> and
let me know your mailing address.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I will
mail your Paint Chip soon after you accept this assignment and once you receive
it, you may begin your project with a little fabric fondlin’ . . . er . . . um
. . . I mean . . . you may begin your project with a trip to your local quilt
shop or, if you are fortunate enough, a trip to your fabric stash to select
colors to match your Paint Chip card!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Pictures of <u>finished</u>
projects will need to be submitted by Midnight Central time, Friday, June 28<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span>,
2013<span style="color: red;">.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>To qualify
as a “finished project”, anything <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">lap-size
quilt and larger</i> only needs to have the top finished, it does not have to
be quilted and bound – anything <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">smaller
than a lap-quilt</i> (i.e. wall hanging, quilted bag/purse, etc.) should be
completely finished.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span>Photos may
be submitted one of three ways:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(1)
Posting the photo on <a href="http://www.thequiltandneedle.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=2571&posts=1&start=1" target="_blank">the Forum’s Challenge thread</a>. (2) Posting the photo on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheQuiltandNeedle?ref=hl#!/events/177429982381244/" target="_blank">theQuilt and Needle’s Challenge Event wall</a>. (3) Emailing the photo to me at </span></b><a href="mailto:cindy@thequiltandneedle.com"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Calibri;">cindy@thequiltandneedle.com</span></b></a><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></b>This
deadline will give everyone well over FIVE months to work on their projects, so
PLEASE do not ask for extensions of the deadline – it is not fair to those
quilters who have finished their chosen projects by the deadline and any
extension requests will NOT be considered.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I will set up polls/albums of all finished projects on both
the Forum and Facebook after the pictures have been submitted and let our Forum
and Facebook members vote on their favorite project!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Blog followers will be directed to
either/both of these sites to cast their vote.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Criteria for voting will be how closely the quilter “showcases” the
colors on her Paint Chip card as well as the creativity of her project.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Voting will end at 5:00 P.M. Central on
Friday, July 5<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span>, 2013.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Votes
from both the Forum poll and the Facebook poll will be added together to
determine the Challenge winner and first runner-up.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The winning quilter will receive a $50.00
gift certificate from the Quilt and Needle.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The first runner-up quilter will receive a $25.00 gift certificate from
the Quilt and Needle.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">So . . . who’s ready to step out of their quilty coloring zones?<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<strong><span style="font-size: x-large;">Winter Mystery Quilt Weekend</span></strong></div>
<div align="left" style="text-align: center;">
<strong><span style="font-size: x-large;">December 28th & 29th, 2012</span></strong></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><strong><span style="font-size: x-large;">"A Quilt for All Seasons"</span> </strong></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman;">
</span></span>
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman;"><span style="font-size: large;">Start by choosing one of the four season’s <b></b>(all four season’s quilt
patterns are included in the instructions, but I suggest you choose one for the
weekend<b></b>). If you would like for the quilt to be more generic and not
directly coordinated with a season, choose Winter <b></b>(or possibly
Spring<b></b>) and put in whatever colors that float your boat. Summer would
also be great for a little girl… just sayin’. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Each individual season’s quilt is 65" x 65". For a fun, king size quilt, you
might like to make all four <b></b>(in colors that don’t clash, of
course<b></b>) and sew them together to make a king size QUILT FOR ALL SEASONS!
If doing all four with the intent to combine them to make a large King size
quilt, think of your finished quilt as a large four patch. Plan your backgrounds
and coordinating fabrics accordingly. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">For each of the four season’s, Fabric A is the background color. It touches
all of the other fabrics and should not, therefore, be too similar to any of the
other fabrics. </span></span></span><strong></strong><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Fabric Requirements</span> </span></strong></div>
<strong>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span></strong><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman; font-size: large;">You need 1/2 yard for binding and 4 yards for the backing of each individual
season’s quilt. Below I have provided examples of fabrics that would work in the
quilts. These are the fabrics I would pick for my quilts, but feel free to
alternate from my examples. If you have questions about the fabrics you choose,
please feel free to email me. I am here to help! </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><em><span style="font-size: large;">The cutting chart will be released late next week. It is short and easily
completed in a short evening or morning <b></b>(assuming you pick one of the
four<b></b>). </span></em><br />

Next weekend’s mystery quilt is
79” x 89” – perfect for a full size bed and just in time for Autumn. By the way,
Clothworks (a fabric manufacturer) is profiling this pattern on the COVER of
their sales boards for International Quilt Market in Houston. Whoop!! So tell
your friends to join us next weekend for a sneak preview of this design, one
month before shop owners even see it! Just have them visit <a href="http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details.asp?Store_id=691&page_id=23&Item_ID=1833"><span style="color: blue;">The

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
Here’s a generous estimate of
what you need, including borders and binding (I’m trying out a way to save some
fabric, but this will definitely cover it):<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
A – 2-3/4 yards<o:p></o:p></div>
B – 2-5/8 yards<o:p></o:p><br />
C – 1-3/8 yards<o:p></o:p><br />
D – 1 yard<o:p></o:p><br />
E – 7/8 yard<o:p></o:p><br />
F – ¾ yard<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
<br />
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><u>How to pick your fabrics:<o:p></o:p></u></b></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
Major hint: Fabric A is the
background fabric. <o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
A and B can be two shades of the
same color (ex. A is a dark grey and B is a medium grey). They do NOT have to
be drastically different, but some difference is preferred. <o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
Using black for B is a really
cool idea. <span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: "sans serif"; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: "sans serif"; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;"><span style="mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span></span><o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
Personally, I am not jazzed
about a single jump-off-the-quilt-and-smack-you-in-the-eyes POP color for this
particular design. If I absolutely had to pick a place for a pop color… I guess
I would put it at C. And I would use yellow. But that’s just me! Yellow is my fav
color afterall. (Don’t take me too literally here, C does NOT have to be
yellow. I just like yellow and think the world would be a happier place with
more yellow in it!)<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
You can use three different fabrics
for D, E, and F, OR you can use one fabric for all three!<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
If you want to make this
scrappy, use dark scrappy colors for A, and light scrappy colors for D, E, and
F (or vice versa). For best results, do not make B or C scrappy.<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;">
Prints… hmmmm… If you have a
large print you like for this, use it for A <u>OR</u> D, E, and F. It wouldn’t
work as B or C. I designed this pattern using tonal fabrics that read almost
solid. Solids would work really well, as would <u>any</u> line of blenders.
Varying smaller prints with blenders would be nice too, it’s just not going to
show off this cool design quite as well. <o:p></o:p></div>

Why yes, a monochromatic color
scheme would work well!<o:p></o:p></div>

I have attached a pic of a few color ways
that I like for this design as an example (these would have been my kits if I’d
carried them this time around). The images show the fabric examples in order,
A-F. Y’all, a ton of variations would work with this pattern. If you want me to
take a look at the fabrics you choose, just send me a pic. I am here to help!</div>

This forces you to measure with your ruler, rather than the lines on the mat (which are more likely to be distorted and less accurate). Have an awesome quilting day!<br />- Jess <br /><br />The Quilt and Needlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03229867274570354924noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6078937882570961533.post-79442550708047473642012-03-12T12:02:00.001-07:002012-03-12T12:03:04.301-07:00March Mystery FUN!!How are you spending your spring break? <br />
Did you play along with the mystery with us over the weekend? If so, we would love to see your pretty top! Come over to the <a href="http://www.thequiltandneedle.com/forums/category-view.asp?showall=true">forum</a> and show us.<br />
<br />
This is a great little quilt. It will perfect for my new baby, once he/she is about toddler size. Actually, my 7 yr old could fit under it. So it will see some long usage, I am sure.<br />
<br />
For you beginners, this is the perfect quilt to try out and practice your HST's (half square triangles) and your flying geese. You make 5 different blocks. So you get plenty of practice.<br />
<br />
For you who have been quilting awhile, this is an easy quilt. But that does NOT mean it's boring! OH NO! There is a twist or two from your usual pattern, that makes it a fun quilt to put together.<br />
<br />
It only takes 5 yards, 1 yard of 5 different fabrics each. So whether you like bright colors, pastels, Americano, 1930s, darks, whatever, it will be smashing in any colorway.<br />
<br />
And just because I don't like to leave you without a picture or two....<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yAc92viWnPY/Tp3DyGhUvFI/AAAAAAAAAvI/UoeIyl-YREs/s1600/mq2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yAc92viWnPY/Tp3DyGhUvFI/AAAAAAAAAvI/UoeIyl-YREs/s400/mq2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Just a few, small sneak peeks...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qSq4lkP_ZpI/Tp3EIcsLBTI/AAAAAAAAAvQ/oyLFD7M7Hco/s1600/mq3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qSq4lkP_ZpI/Tp3EIcsLBTI/AAAAAAAAAvQ/oyLFD7M7Hco/s400/mq3.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Cause it's not a mystery...if you know what it looks like beforehand.<br />
<br />

<br />
The Oct mystery weekend is coming!! YAH! Mark your calenders for Oct 15th &16th. You wont want to miss it. Jess has the best mysteries on the net (in my humble opinion :) LOL )<br />
<br />
Anyways, you can order the mystery pattern <a href="http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details.asp?Shopper_id=63831031358256383&Store_id=691&page_id=23&Item_ID=1833">here</a>, for only $9.95. And you can buy a beautiful kit <a href="http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/stores_app/Browse_dept_items.asp?Shopper_id=63831031358256383&Store_id=691&Page_id=17&categ_id=113&parent_ids=0,2">here</a>, if you want.<br />
<br />
You don't have to use a kit though. All you need is five fabulous fabrics that go well together, one yard of each fabric.<br />
<br />
These are the ones I am using.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YoRROcRLrD4/ToofCpZAsgI/AAAAAAAAAvE/6Q-TI0AisdI/s1600/Octmystery.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="245" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YoRROcRLrD4/ToofCpZAsgI/AAAAAAAAAvE/6Q-TI0AisdI/s400/Octmystery.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
It being Fall, Jess had Fall fabrics in mind when she made this mystery....but...well, this is what I had. LOL. I like Summery fabrics more than Fall ones anyways :) I'm sure it will look beautiful though, no matter what season you use.<br />
<br />
I hope you all come over to the forum and join in the discussion and pictures when the weekend is here. You have to be a member of our forums to join to see the mystery threads though.<br />
<br />
But we always have lots of fun things going on. So come on down and join the fun.The Quilt and Needlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03229867274570354924noreply@blogger.com0
